Haley Freedlund (they/them) is a trombonist and vocalist. Born in Portland, OR and based in Seattle, WA, Haley has always moved effortlessly between the Pacific Northwest’s abundant musical communities. Their compositional practice often creates an amalgam of jazz, chamber music, songwriting, and free improvisation.
Haley has been privileged to enjoy musical collaborations with pop artists and songwriters both in the studio and on the road; performed the music of living composers for reprisals, programs, and world premieres; participated in works for the stage among Seattle's rich drag and burlesque scenes; and had the fortune to play alongside jazz greats throughout the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, and Eastern US.
For over a decade, Haley has been at the heart of Seattle’s experimental and free improvisation communities. They were the lead curator and producer of Racer Sessions from 2017 until its retirement in 2025, and co-curated the Seattle Improvised Music Festival from 2018 to 2021. Collaborators and improvising partners include musicians such as Wayne Horvitz, Tom Varner, Caroline Kraabel, Phillip Greenlief, Neil Welch, Patrick Shiroishi, Kate Olson, and James Falzone.
